Prāṇa: breath and the rhythm of attention

November 7, 2026 by Akhil K Singh
Cover for R14

A class can be ordered into silence, but not into attention. The old Indian idea of prāṇa suggests that a child’s attention rides on the breath, and that a room where a child cannot breathe freely is a room where a child cannot fully learn.

November 7, 2026 by Akhil K Singh

Movement before words: crawling, balance and the first two years

November 7, 2026 by Akhil K Singh
Cover for R38

A baby crawling across a cool floor is not getting ready to think. She is already thinking, with her palms, her knees and her sense of balance.

When stillness is mistaken for attention

November 7, 2026 by Akhil K Singh
Cover for R50

We read stillness as attention because stillness is visible and attention is not. What moving bodies are really doing, and why attention can be cultivated but never commanded.

Affordances: what a classroom invites a child to do

November 7, 2026 by Akhil K Singh
Cover for R3

Nobody told the boy to walk along the ledge. The ledge did. James Gibson’s idea of affordances suggests that every classroom is already a lesson, whether we plan one or not.

Sri Aurobindo and the Mother: integral and physical education

November 7, 2026 by Akhil K Singh
Cover for R29

Sri Aurobindo and the Mother gave the body a real place in education and equal ground to girls. They still kept it below the mind, and that is where this series parts ways with them.

Voice: speaking, singing and the body of language

November 7, 2026 by Akhil K Singh
Cover for R41

Language does not reach a child as a code. It arrives as breath, vibration and rhythm, and the voice is where it lives.

Screens and the young child: what the evidence supports

November 7, 2026 by Akhil K Singh
Cover for R53

The evidence on screens and young children supports limits, not panic. The strongest finding is not about minutes at all but about being answered.

The extended mind: when the hand, the slate and the abacus think together

November 7, 2026 by Akhil K Singh
Cover for R6

A child counting on her fingers is not cheating. The extended mind shows how a notebook, a slate or an abacus can become part of thinking itself.

Śraddhā: trust as a condition for learning

November 7, 2026 by Akhil K Singh
Cover for R18

Śraddhā is usually translated as faith, but its old root means placing your heart somewhere. The Gītā, the Buddhist suttas and research on children agree that trust comes before learning, and that the teacher has to earn it.
